Increasingly we are seeing that the Internet can literally orchestrate events.
At the 2010 Olympic closing ceremonies there were the greetings from Sochi, Russia, where the 2014 Winter Olympics are to be held. Dancers from the Kirov and Bolshoi ballets danced while Valery Gergiev, who was in BC Place, conducted a full live orchestra playing in Red Square via satellite. Meanwhile former Olympic gold medal ice dancers Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov skated on the shores of the Black Sea.
More recently, composer Eric Whitacre collected YouTube clips from 185 amateur singers in twelve different countries who sang “Lux Arumque” to create a sort of virtual super choir. Whitacre played the role of virtual maestro to the group of singing strangers. (This clip is worthwhile seeing for a couple of minutes.)

With the increasing speed of communications, what other events are and could be 'orchestrated'?
- demonstrations, rallies, speeches
- art, poems, creative expressions
- student debates, presentations, assemblies
- tree planting, environmental clean up, 40th anniversary of Earth Day, April 22
- 2010’s Earth Hour will see cities around the world turning off their lights from 8:30pm on Saturday 27 March to show their support for urgent action against global warming.
Can you think of other events which the Internet can orchestrate for good?
