Whether the Chinese government admits it or not, there is a problem with Tibet's ancient cultural heritage...it is actually dying. ~Dalai Lama
China must stop naming, blaming, and verbally abusing one whose life has been devoted to non violence, His Holiness, the Dalai Lama. ~ Desmond Tuto, Nobel Laureate
The People's Republic of China wants a perfect Olympics. It is putting the polishing touches on venues and hosting facilities which should impress a world wide audience come August 8. Its athletes also should be formidable competitors thanks to a decade long push to select and prepare its best. Factories have been given notice around Beijing that production will cease weeks before the Olympics to ensure that air quality is improved.
Now a wrinkle comes along in China's bold plans: will athletes be able to scale Mount Everest and hold the flame aloft on the peak? What great media coverage that would be. However, the recent riots in Tibet reveal to the world that many are dissatisfied with Chinese rule which has existed since the Cultural Revolution of the 60's. Centuries of rich religious and cultural history has been threatened. Only a small fraction of Tibetan Buddhist monasteries, for example, still survive. Its Dalai Lama, the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize winner, has been exiled from the country since 1959.
China has directed that climbers need to be clear of the Everest peak from May 1 - 10. Nepal on the south side will try to comply. The Chinese control on the north side now faces a challenge. Indeed, the whole route of the Olympic flame will have to receive much closer security. Will a fragile culture suffer alongside Olympic ideals?
